Mission Statement: To nurture learners to become competent and effective users of the English Language through an innovative and creative English Language and Literature curriculum.
We believe in using engaging activities and programmes to motivate students to do well in English Language and Literature and develop a love for these subjects.
Here in Canberra, there is a myriad of interesting activities and programmes such as show and tell and debates to develop our students’ language abilities and cultivate their interest in the language. Our Lower Sec NT students even had a chance to watch a movie at a cinema during their EL lessons.
As part of our Morning Reading Programme, our students read extensively and the reading materials include The Straits Times and subscribed magazines. Beyond just pen and paper assessment and assignments, there are alternative forms of assessment which involve the the use of ICT tools such as Google classroom, photo, audio and video editing software, and other collaborative tools such as Google Documents and Slides. Students had rich opportunities to apply their language learning in authentic, real world tasks through carrying out projects such as writing a magazine feature about an interview with a fictional celebrity, creating a video slideshow presentation reflecting on their time in Canberra Secondary, and filming a documentary about hidden gems in the Sembawang neighbourhood. To develop fluency in writing and a reflective cast of mind, students are also involved in journal writing which takes the form of Reading and Writing Journals.
The Literature programme aims to cultivate a keen and critical appreciation of literature and literary language. Through the study of literary texts in different genres (poetry, prose and drama) and written by a variety of authors (local and foreign), students learn to perceive the world from different perspectives and better appreciate the richness of human experience. They also respond closely and critically to the writers’ use of literary techniques and in so doing gain a deeper understanding of the power and potential of language to challenge the mind and move the heart.
In Literature lessons, students learn to read closely and think critically about what they have read. They are also encouraged to make connections between the themes and characters of the text and their personal experiences, to better engage with the timeless and often complex ideas the writers convey. During lessons, students respond to the texts in a variety of ways, for instance, constructing creative character profiles, dramatising the events or the language of the texts, and writing imaginative diary entries from the perspectives of the characters. These provide an immersive and engaging environment for students to activate both their imaginations and their critical faculties.
