School Rules
The school rules provide guidelines for acceptable students’ behaviour and conduct. They are designed to help students cultivate a set of positive behaviour that will empower them to learn in a safe and conducive environment.
Respect for our Nation and School

All students must stand at attention during the flag-raising ceremony.

Students who are Singapore citizens must sing the National Anthem and take the Pledge. Students will take the Pledge with the right fist placed over the heart.

Students are to uphold school values at all times.
Attendance and Punctuality
-
Students are to be present in school (at the FRC venue [parade square/school hall/classroom]) at least 5 minutes before the start of the flag-raising ceremony at 7.50 am, so as to be punctual for the ceremony.

Attendance at school or any school organised activity is compulsory. A medical certificate or a letter of excuse from the student’s parent is required for absence from school.

Students must report punctually for class and any other school event/activity.
-
Students are not allowed to leave the school premises during school hours.
School Attire
-
Students are to wear the prescribed school uniform (P.E. uniform inclusive) and modification to the school uniform or P.E. attire is strictly not allowed. Students are to be in approved school attire whenever they enter the school premises at all times of the year, including school holidays.

The school uniform must be worn neatly and shirts should be tucked in at all times.

Students are allowed to put on approved school T-shirts and school bottoms subjected to the recommendation of the Character Coaches/Year Heads. These approved school T-shirts must be tucked in neatly at all times.

School ties must be neatly worn for the first period on Mondays. Students should button up their collars whenever they put on school ties.

During PE lessons, all students must wear approved school PE T-shirts and shorts. PE T-shirts must be tucked in neatly at all times.

During CCA sessions, all students must wear approved school PE/CCA T-shirts and shorts. PE/CCA T-shirts must be tucked in neatly at all times.

If a T-shirt is worn underneath the school shirt, it must be the approved school PE T-shirt.
-
Fanciful spectacles, coloured contact lenses and tinted glasses are not allowed.
-
No forms of personal accessories are to be worn with the school uniform.
Personal Grooming
-
No make-up and/or body art of any form is allowed.
-
Fingernails must be kept short and clean at all times.
-
Hair must be in its natural colour or state. Dyed hair and/or tinted hair is not allowed.
-
Outlandish hairstyles, overhang and inner cut styles (inconsistent length and styles) are not allowed.
-
Male students must be neat in their appearance, clean-shaven and no facial hair is allowed (no moustache or beard).
Grooming for Boys
-
The hair must be short, thin and neat. It must not touch the ears and the collar at all times of the year.

Fringes must not touch the eyebrows.
-
Sideburns must be short and must not extend beyond the middle level of each ear.
Grooming for Girls
-
Long fringes (beyond the eyebrows) must be pinned up neatly using black/dark blue hairpins only.
-
Hair must not go beyond the collar. If it does, it must be tied up neatly at all times.
-
Only solid black / dark blue clips or hair bands are allowed.
-
Only one small, plain and simple ear stud of the same design is allowed on each earlobe. No other earrings are allowed.
Shoes and Socks
1. Only white canvas/track shoes with shoe laces are allowed. Socks must be plain white and visibly worn. No high-cut or velcro shoes are permitted.
2. Students are allowed to wear track shoes during sports-related activities during their CCA.
3. Students who are unable to wear school shoes due to injury must produce a medical certificate and seek approval from the Character Coaches before coming to school in slippers.
For inappropriate grooming, the school reserves the right to contact and request the parents to fetch the student from the school for follow up actions.
The school reserves the right to confiscate accessories deemed inappropriate by the school. Students may also be requested to purchase a new set of uniform or shoes should the uniform or shoes not meet the school’s standards.
Lockers outside the Classroom

Each student is provided with a locker outside the classroom. Students are to ensure that they secure their lockers with their own padlocks.

Students are responsible for the lockers that are provided. They should handle the lockers with care. Students will be accountable for any damages or missing parts inside the lockers when they handover the lockers at the end of the year.

Students are advised not to bring any valuables to the school. If students choose to bring the items, they are to be solely responsible for the safekeeping of the items. Students can keep these valuables in their school lockers.

Students are reminded not to leave their Personal Learning Device (PLD) on the desks or in the classroom when they leave for their recess or go to another venue for their lessons. They should bring their PLD with them or keep the devices in their lockers.

The school shall not be responsible for the loss of any personal equipment or possession that are placed in the school lockers.
Conduct in the Classroom
-
Students are to behave in a manner (Seated. Awake. Focused. Engaged.) that promotes a conducive environment for learning. Students who exhibit disruptive behaviour during a lesson can be taken out of the classroom and serve time-out at the foyer so as to reflect on their behaviour.

Students must bring the assigned school textbook, workbook, exercise book or any items requested by the subject teacher.

Students are expected to complete assignments or homework given by fulfilling the requirements and deadlines set by the subject teacher.

Students are to remain in their designated seats (as decided by their Character Coaches) at all times unless permission is given by the subject teacher to proceed to another seat.
-
Students are to ensure that the classroom is kept clean and neat at all times.
-
Food and drinks are to be consumed only in the canteen. Food, titbits, sweets or sugared drinks cannot be consumed anywhere outside the canteen area (which includes study area facing the canteen or benches outside the school bookshop, classrooms, school field and school foyer).

Healthy snacks are allowed to be consumed in the classroom only during the designated time.

Only plain water is allowed to be consumed in the classroom.

Students moving from one classroom to another must move together as a class in a quiet and orderly manner.

The Class Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson are to ensure that the classroom is locked during recess or when the entire class proceed to a special room for lessons. They are also responsible for the overall state of the cleanliness and classroom tone at the end of curriculum time.
Restricted Use of Items

Students are not allowed to bring any weapon-like item which can be used or intended to be used to cause harm to others.
-
During curriculum time, mobile phones are to be switched off and kept safely in the students’ bag or school lockers.

Mobile phones should be kept out of sight and switched off during the change-over of lessons and while students are walking along the corridor.
-
During recess, the use of mobile phones will be restricted to the two usage zones: the canteen and the foyer area.

Students can only use their Personal Learning Device (PLD) for learning. Mobile phones should not be used for learning purposes.

Students are not allowed to play games on their PLD or mobile phones at all times.
-
Students may be required to surrender their mobile phones to teachers for safekeeping if they violate any of the guidelines. Students may also be requested to surrender their mobile phones during investigation should they be involved in any offences.

Mobile phones confiscated will be kept until 4.30pm on the day of confiscation. Students are to collect from the General Office no later than 5.30pm.

Failure to comply with the confiscation order will be treated as open defiance towards authority which is classified as a serious offence in the Student Handbook.
Public Behaviour
-
Students are ambassadors of the school hence they are expected to behave in a manner that promotes the good name of Canberra Secondary School.

Students are not allowed to loiter at any HDB void decks/public spaces, make loud noises or cause public nuisances.
-
All rules pertaining to grooming, attire and the expected code of behaviour stated in the school rules are applicable in public places.
